India’s Logistics Data Bank Tracks 10 Crore EXIM Containers
π Source: PIB, Ministry of Commerce & Industry | Date: 14 August 2026 |
The Logistics Data Bank (LDB) has now tracked 10 crore EXIM containers since its 2016 launch. The milestone highlights how the platform is helping exporters and importers track container movement across India.
π Why this matters
- π¦ 100% coverage: LDB provides visibility of 100% of India's EXIM container movement, using RFID-based tracking.
- π Massive network: Covers 19 ports, 32 container terminals, 103 Inland Container Depots, 439 Container Freight Stations, 89 Manufacturing SEZs, 5,569 railway stations, 269 toll plazas, and 3 Integrated Check Posts.
- π’ High-seas tracking: LDB 2.0 (launched Sept 2025) added tracking of export containers on high seas, plus multimodal shipment visibility.
- π Heavy usage: Over 1.5 crore container searches happen on the platform every month.
✅ Key Highlight: LDB has tracked 10 crore EXIM containers since 2016, with 100% visibility across India's port, rail, road, and terminal network — accessible to stakeholders via a single-window platform.
What LDB Actually Does
LDB uses RFID, IoT, Big Data, and Cloud technologies to track containers as they move across ports, rail networks, industrial zones, borders, and highways. It gives near real-time visibility of container movement across the entire logistics chain — not just at the port, but end-to-end.
Beyond raw tracking, the platform provides analytics on:
- Dwell time at ports and terminals
- Transit time across the logistics chain
- Port and terminal performance
This helps exporters, importers and logistics stakeholders identify bottlenecks and monitor delays across the logistics chain.
Why the Coverage Expansion Matters
LDB's reach now extends well beyond ports:
| Infrastructure Type | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Ports | 19 |
| Container Terminals | 32 |
| Inland Container Depots (ICDs) | 103 |
| Container Freight Stations (CFSs) | 439 |
| Manufacturing SEZs | 89 |
| Railway Stations | 5,569 |
| Toll Plazas | 269 |
| Integrated Check Posts | 3 |
For exporters and importers, this means container movement can be tracked across manufacturing zones, rail and road networks, ports and, with LDB 2.0, on high seas through a single platform.
What Officials Said
Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, called the milestone "an important milestone in India's logistics journey," adding that efficient logistics is central to strengthening manufacturing and expanding India's presence in global markets.
Shri Rajat Kumar Saini, CEO & MD of NICDC and Chairman of NLDSL, noted that LDB "began with the objective of bringing visibility to EXIM container movement" and has "today become an important digital platform for India's logistics sector," crediting cooperation across the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, ports, terminals, CFSs, and ICDs.
The World Bank's Logistics Performance Index (LPI) has also recognised LDB's role in India's overall logistics performance.
Who Runs LDB
LDB is operated by NICDC Logistics Data Services Limited (NLDSL), a joint venture between the Government of India (via the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust) and Japanese IT major NEC Corporation. NLDSL was set up on 30 December 2015 specifically to bring ICT-driven efficiency to India's logistics sector, and also manages the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP).
The Bottom Line
For exporters and importers using Indian ports, the system provides visibility into container movement across the logistics chain 100% of EXIM container movement is tracked. The practical value is visibility: knowing where your cargo is, how long it's dwelling at a terminal, and where delays are building up, all through a single window at www.ldb.co.in.
