GI Tags in India: What Exporters Need to Know (2026 Update)
📌 Source: DPIIT / PIB & Ministry of Commerce & Industry data | Updated: 4/8/2026
India now has 800+ GI-tagged products.
But here’s the real question — are we actually using them to increase value, or just listing them as labels?
📌 Why this matters
- 💰 Higher price realization: GI tags can lift rural artisan/producer incomes by 20–30% (Ministry of Textiles).
- 🌍 Proven export premium: Karnataka GI fruits sold to the Maldives earned 40–50% higher returns for farmers.
- 🤝 New market access opening up: India–Oman CEPA, a New Zealand commitment, and India–EU FTA talks are extending formal GI protection overseas.
- 💸 Cheaper to register: 2025 amendment cut GI filing fees by 80%; renewal fee down from ₹3,000 to ₹500.
Key Sectors & States with GI Tagged Products
India is home to GI-tagged products across categories such as handicraft products, agricultural products, manufactured goods, food products and natural products.
India’s GI products span across multiple categories:
- Handicraft products — 445 handicraft products and 27 product logos registered under the Act (as of December 2025). Examples: Pashmina from Jammu & Kashmir, Baluchari Saree from West Bengal, Banaras Gulabi Meenakari Craft from Uttar Pradesh.
- Agricultural products — 251 products registered, spanning cereals, fruits, vegetables, spices, and non-basmati rice.
- Manufacturing products — 64 manufactured products registered, such as Nashik Valley Wine and Kannauj Perfume.
- Food products — 66 food products, including West Bengal's Bardhaman Mihidana and Sitabhog, Odisha's Kendrapara Rasabali, and Andhra Pradesh's Tirupathi Laddu.
- Natural products — 5 registered: Makrana Marble (Rajasthan), Chunar Balua Patthar (Uttar Pradesh), Lac of Purulia (West Bengal), Panna Diamond (Madhya Pradesh), Ambaji White Marble (Gujarat). Hundreds of other natural-origin goods fall under the Agricultural Products category instead.
Registration essentials exporters should know
Before applying, here are a few important rules exporters should know:
- Generic product names no longer protected in their country of origin.
- Indications that mislead consumers or falsely suggest a different geographical origin.
- Indications that offend religious sentiments or contain scandalous, offensive, or obscene matter.
- Indications not eligible for legal protection or that violate any law in force.
The registration of a GI is valid for ten years, but may be renewed from time to time.
When can a GI tag be cancelled?
The revocation, cancellation, or variation of a GI registration is governed by Section 27 of the Act. Any aggrieved person may apply to the Registrar or the competent authority for cancellation or variation of a registered GI. The Registrar or the Appellate Board may also initiate such action on their own if necessary.
A GI registration may be revoked or cancelled if:
- It was obtained through fraud or misrepresentation.
- It is no longer protected in its country of origin or has fallen into disuse.
- Its use is likely to deceive consumers, violates any law, or contains scandalous or obscene matter.
Export markets already paying the GI premium
| Market | GI Product | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Maldives | Karnataka GI fruits | 40–50% higher returns |
| Canada | Salem Sago | Expanded demand |
| UK & Italy | Joha Rice | New markets, better pricing |
| Dubai | Tezpur Litchi | ~10% higher prices |
📌 How FTAs are creating new GI export opportunities
- India–Oman CEPA: 3 MT of GI-tagged Indi Lime already exported to Oman (Dec 2025).
- New Zealand has committed to registering Indian GIs — until now an EU-only privilege.
- India–EU FTA talks include a dedicated GI agreement, still under negotiation.
Register early — application fee is low and reimbursement schemes are available for MSME.
